Antoine Marie Joseph (known as Antonin) Artaud was born on 4 September 1896 in Marseille to a bourgeois family: his mother, Euphrasie Nalpas, was of Turkish origin (Izmir), while his father Antoine was a long time captain. He was a French playwright, actor, essayist and theatre director. Artaud believed that the text had ended up exerting a tyranny on the spectacle, and in his place he pushed for an integral theatre, which included and put on the same level all forms of language, merging gesture, movement, light and word.
