Austria is one of the Alpine states (with Switzerland and Liechtenstein), as the territory is very strongly linked to these mountains. In the past centuries Austria has often been at the centre of world affairs, both in political and cultural aspects, the drastic reduction of its surface area at the end of the First World War has decreed a lower influence.
