Born on 2 April 742 - although the date is not certain - Charlemagne was King of the Franks, King of the Lombards and first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. He was an incredibly big and powerful man, especially for his time, a valiant fighter and a great heartbreaker. Thanks to him, the European continent in a sense saw the power vacuum that had been created after the barbarian invasions and the subsequent fall of Rome filled.
In short, it should come as no surprise that this sovereign collector of titles and triumphs in battles has gone down in history with the appellation Magno (from the Latin magnus, great)!
