Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean and the only one on the Asian continent (and not European as is sometimes reported), is located south of the Turkish coast and east of those of Syria. At a political level Cyprus is divided since 1974 between Greece and Turkey and only the first part has entered the European Union, the negotiations for the reunification have so far failed.
